Waterloo Coin Society to host coin exchange Sept. 21

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Waterloo Coin Society (WCS) will participate in Doors Open Waterloo Region with a special coin exchange event.

As part of the regional program, which opens historically, culturally, and architecturally significant sites to the public for free, the WCS will offer visitors the chance to exchange $5 cash for a set of three newly circulating commemorative coins. Each set will include a black ring toonie, a National Indigenous Peoples Day toonie and a Lucy Maud Montgomery loonie, with at least one colourized coin guaranteed in each set.

The coin exchange is being conducted by the WCS and is not affiliated with the Royal Canadian Mint.

The WCS will be stationed at the Perimeter Institute on Caroline Street in Waterloo, Ont., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., engaging visitors with a variety of activities. Alongside the coin exchange, the day will feature numismatic displays, a people’s choice award, a door prize draw, a looping presentation of Canadian and foreign coins, and the opportunity to purchase WCS medals and banknotes. The club will also offer door prizes, including one-year memberships and a 2024 Classic Uncirculated Set from the Royal Canadian Mint.

Visitors can also collect stickers from any of the 26 participating Doors Open sites across Waterloo Region. Collecting at least three stickers will give them a chance to win one of three $100 downtown dollars prizes, redeemable in Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge.
