The United States Mint has launched sales of its 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal, celebrating the first U.S. dollar coin issued in 1794.
Limited to 75,000 pieces, the medal is struck in 99.9 percent Fine silver with an Uncirculated finish at the mint’s Philadelphia facility.
In a nod to history, 1,794 of the medals include a special “230” privy mark, with 230 of those featuring a certificate of authenticity signed by mint director Ventris Gibson. These special editions are randomly distributed among the overall mintage.
The medal’s obverse recreates Robert Scot’s original design, featuring Liberty facing right, surrounded by 15 stars for the states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794. The reverse mirrors the 1794 dollar’s laurel wreath and eagle design, maintaining the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
The medal will be released Nov. 14.
