Three major collections anchor RCNA Auction

Three standout collections of coins, tokens, and banknotes will headline this year’s official Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) convention auction, set to run over four sessions from July 17–20 in Calgary.

Hosted by The Canadian Numismatic Company (TCNC), the auction is being held in conjunction with the RCNA’s annual convention, which returns to the Alberta city for the first time in over a decade. The sale features more than 1,200 lots, with highlights from over 90 consignors.

Anchoring Collections

The auction is anchored by:

  • Part VI of the Southern Ontario Collection, featuring Canadian coins and banknotes;

  • Part IV of the Brown Family Collection of rare paper money; and

  • the Howard Gilbey Collection of Canadian medals and tokens.

“This auction will be unlike any other seen in this country,” said TCNC auctioneer Marc Verret. “We’re presenting several museum-calibre pieces alongside carefully selected rarities. It promises to be one of the most prestigious numismatic events of 2025.”

Key Highlights

Among the notable items crossing the block:

  • A unique 1898H one-cent coin with reeded edge, PCGS certified;

  • A Bank of Commerce 1892 $10 note with rare YUKON overprint;

  • A Newfoundland 1870 $2 gold coin in Mint State-63;

  • A 1948 silver dollar, ICCS MS-66;

  • An 1891 25-cent coin, Gem MS-65+;

  • A Treaty No. 7 “Indian Chief” medal;

  • A 1935 $1,000 French-text note from the Brown Family Collection;

  • A 1919 $10 Merchants Bank note in Uncirculated;

  • A “Serial Number One” U.S.A. uncut sheet;

  • A pair of “GR” test notes in Gem Uncirculated;

  • And a modern rarity: the 1986 $5 “GOG” test note.

Many of the banknotes are graded by PMG and LCG, with numerous French-text 1935 issues—especially in $20, $25, and $1,000 denominations—deemed “excessively rare and desirable,” according to Verret.
