A seldom-seen 1966 Small Beads silver dollar leads an impressive lineup of Canadian decimal rarities featured in the latest issue of Canadian Coin News, released Sept. 1.
The coin is one of the marquee offerings in Colonial Acres’ three-day Fall Premier Numismatic Auction, set for Sept. 25-27. The firm’s 161st auction features more than 1,800 lots of coins, banknotes, medals, tokens, bullion and other numismatic material spread across three sessions.
Certified MS-65 by ICG/ICCS, the 1966 Small Beads silver dollar has a reported mintage of just 485 pieces and carries an estimate of $8,500 and up. Colonial Acres auction coordinator Janae Kroondijk told CCN the firm has handled the elusive variety only a handful of times — and never before in a grade as high as MS-65.
But the Small Beads dollar is far from the only Canadian rarity crossing the auction block. An 1890-H 50-cent piece graded PCGS XF-45, an 1889 25-cent graded ICCS MS-62 and a key-date 1915 10-cent graded PCGS MS-66 are among the other major highlights.
Collectors will also find one of Canada’s most famous decimal rarities: the 1921 five-cent piece, widely known as the “Prince of Canadian Decimal Coins.” Beyond the headline lots, the auction offers key dates, scarce varieties and higher-grade Canadian coins, along with world and U.S. coins, errors, militaria, tokens and medals.
