Serial number 21 ‘Devil’s Face’ notes cross block in Texas

A set of six 1954 “Devil’s Face” banknotes featuring the serial number “0000021” crossed the block in Texas this October.

From Lot 28086 to Lot 28091, the sale offered $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 “serial number 21” notes, which brought $27,960 US (about $34,600 Cdn.) altogether. They were offered by Heritage Auctions during its Oct. 23 Paper Money Fair World Banknote Signature Auction.

The set’s top-selling note was the $50 denomination (BC-34a) from the Bank of Canada’s Canadian Landscape series in Gem Uncirculated-65 EPQ (exceptional paper quality) from Paper Money Guaranty (PMG). It brought $8,400 US (about $10,400 Cdn.) as Lot 28090.

The set’s highest denomination, the $100 note (BC-35a), was offered as Lot 28091 in PMG Gem Uncirculated-66 EPQ. It brought $7,200 US (about $8,900 Cdn.).
