Seminars, ‘Young Collectors’ auction at today’s Trajan show

Parents are invited to bring their budding young collectors to the National Postage Stamp and Coin Show today for a seminar as well as a combined coin and stamp auction exclusively for children.

At 11 a.m., long-time collector and CCN columnist Jeff Fournier will lead a workshop teaching young and beginning collectors about the hobbies of coin and stamp collecting.

Later today, a “Young Collectors” auction will be hosted by Lisa McPherson, national youth co-ordination of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) and first vice-president of the Ontario Numismatic Association. The auction, which is free for children to participate in, will feature at least 25 lots of coin and stamp material thanks to donations from show organizers, dealers and participating hobby associations.

Highlights include two branded piggybanks, including a Batman bank; Canadian Tire money with consecutive serial numbers; world coins, including three British six pence dated 1953, 1954 and 1957; and the 2018 lotus stamps issued by Canada Post.

“There are certain people that come every year for the auction now. It’s all word of mouth,” said McPherson.

“Coin and stamp collecting are almost becoming a dying thing; people – and kids, too – are going to the Internet, and it’s taking the personal touch out of the hobby. With the youth, they enjoy the auction and look forward to coming out, meeting other kids interested in the same things,” she said, adding she’s “absolutely excited” to see the auction grow.

With free admission to the show as well as no cost for the youth auction and discounted material at the Young Collectors booth, the show is an affordable avenue into collecting for children.

“It allows them to start in the hobby. It doesn’t have to be expensive,” said McPherson, who thanked show organizers, dealers and other participating organizations for their donations. “We have to get the youth because those are our future collectors and dealers; they’re the future of the hobby.”

HOBBY PARTNERSHIPS

The Young Collectors program enjoys a partnership with the RCNA as well as other numismatic organizations, including the Canadian Association of Numismatic Dealers (CAND).

“I started my first auction in 2014. What I’ve been trying to do is get all the organizations to work together and put politics aside for the sake of our future, and that’s in the youth. I’m so pleased that at this show we have the RCNA; CAND, which provides the goodie bags; philatelic associations; and Trajan’s National Postage Stamp and Coin Show. That’s four organizations working together, and I couldn’t be happier,” said McPherson.

“The auction also helps kids to come out of their shell; they’re always a bit shy at the beginning, but once we get going, that changes quick.”
