By Mike Walsh

In an exciting debut, Geoffrey Bell Auctions’ Sale No. 31 on Oct. 4 will showcase the late founder’s inaugural medal offering, headlined by Indian Peace medals and the exceptionally rare Province of Canada/New Brunswick trial and pattern set of 10 pieces.

This highly anticipated auction is expected to attract significant attention from collectors and historians alike, serving as a tribute to Geoffrey Bell’s dedication to numismatics and Canadian history.

The revered dealer and collector passed away on July 24, leaving behind a legacy that profoundly shaped the Canadian banknote scene and the broader numismatic industry. Geoff’s influence, developed over decades, will continue to inspire future generations of collectors and dealers. Geoffrey Bell Auctions, founded in 2008 by Geoff alongside his son Brian and daughter-in-law Dawn, remains at the forefront of the industry, carrying forward his passion for the history and artistry of coins, medals, and banknotes. This upcoming auction, featuring Bell’s initial medal collection, stands as a testament to his enduring impact and commitment to the numismatic world.

Bell’s passion for numismatics began long before the creation of Geoffrey Bell Auctions. In 1986, he opened the Coin Cabinet in Moncton, N.B., which soon became a key institution in the Canadian numismatic community. His expertise and love for collecting quickly earned him respect throughout the industry. The transition to a family business came naturally, with Geoffrey Bell Auctions building a stellar reputation for offering some of the finest and rarest coins, banknotes and historical artifacts.

The inclusion of Bell’s personal medal collection in this auction is particularly significant. Featuring historically important Indian Peace medals and rare trial and pattern pieces, this offering reflects his deep commitment to preserving Canada’s rich numismatic history. As the auction approaches, collectors and enthusiasts alike are reminded of Bell’s profound contributions to the field, ensuring his influence will continue to shape the numismatic community for years to come.

Held in conjunction with the Toronto Coin Expo (Oct. 4-5), the sale will be hosted at the show venue located at the Toronto Reference Library in downtown Toronto. See story on the Expo show on page 17. A second auctin preview story on other outstanding lots in the one-day sale is on page 28.

Lot 53 offers a rare and unique set of Province of Canada and New Brunswick trial and pattern coins. “This extraordinary set is a dream acquisition for collectors, offering not just exceptional pieces, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says auctioneer Brian Bell. “The set includes 10 pieces, many of which are one-of-a-kind, making it one of the most significant offerings in Canadian numismatic history.”
