Believed to be one of only 10 examples still in existence today, an 1819 George III gold sovereign is being offered by Britain’s Royal Mint for £100,000 (about $167,000 Cdn.).
Interested buyers are invited to submit a ballot application for “a rare opportunity to own an 1819 sovereign,” which dates back 200 years to when Queen Victoria was born. One of only 3,574 examples struck that year, the example being offered by the Royal Mint is “rated ‘good fine,’” according to the mint’s website.
It is being sold at a fixed price, and the winning ballot will be chosen at random on July 12.
To enter the ballot, register your interest online before June 28.
The highest-quality 1819 sovereign known to exist achieved a price of £186,000 at auction in 2013.
