Australia’s Perth Mint recently issued a series of Star Trek coins and bullion, the latest of which came in the form of one ounce of 99.9 per cent pure silver with gold plating, resembling a slip of gold-pressed latinum as seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, latinum was a rare silver-coloured liquid of extremely high value. It was prized by many civilizations in the Alpha Quadrant, particularly the Ferengi Alliance.

A total of 5,000 of these gold-plated “latinum” bars—each with a special wooden case, an illustrated shipper, and a numbered certificate of authenticity—will be struck.
