New Issue: Star Wars coins released by NZ Mint

Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker featured on New Zealand’s latest Star Wars Classic coin

Luke Skywalker is the latest character to join the New Zealand Mint’s Star Wars Classic coin collection.

These Fine gold and silver coins show Skywalker standing by his X-34 landspeeder on the planet of Tatooine, in Star Wars: A New Hope. These coins come presented in Star Wars-branded packaging. Officially licensed, this issue has a limited worldwide mintage of 10,000 $2 one-ounce silver coins; 500 $250 one-ounce gold coins; and 1,000 $25 quarter-ounce gold coins.

The Star Wars Classic collection highlights many of the great characters associated with the series, including Skywalker; fellow Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi; Princess Leia; R2-D2; Yoda; Han Solo; and Darth Vader.

NZ MINT’S FIRST STAR WARS SHIPS COIN FEAT. MILLENNIUM FALCON

The first coin of the New Zealand Mint’s new Star Wars Ships collection is this one-ounce Fine silver coin (shown above) featuring the Millennium Falcon.

The famed Millennium Falcon is the first ship to be featured in the New Zealand Mint’s new Star Wars Ships collection.

The ounce-ounce Fine silver coin features part of the design blueprint for the YT-1300 Millennium Falcon. This unique piece comes presented in Star Wars-branded packaging. Limited worldwide mintage is 10,000 coins.

Despite her humble origins and shabby exterior, the Falcon has played a role in some of the greatest victories of the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. It looks like a worn-out junker, but beneath her hull she’s full of surprises. A succession of owners—from Lando Calrissian and Han Solo to Gannis Ducain—have made special modifications that boosted the freighter’s speed, shielding and firepower to impressive (and downright illegal) levels.

The price of such tinkering? The Falcon can be unpredictable, with her hyperdrive particularly balky. Despite her flaws, she’s beloved by her owners; Han Solo and Chewbacca have spent years searching the galaxy for the ship they once called home.
