Mint unveils unique sundial coin and October releases

The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a diverse range of new coins as part of its October releases, including a unique sundial coin that combines functionality with intricate craftsmanship.

These latest offerings highlight Canada’s rich history, heritage, and natural beauty, according to the Mint.

Among the standout coins is The Sundial, a fine silver collectible that marries craftsmanship with functionality. “An elaborate and functional showcase of craftsmanship, this limited collectible adds a working sundial to your coin collection,” said the Mint. The coin features a rhodium-plated brass gnomon, which casts an angled shadow onto the engraved pure silver base to indicate local solar time when aligned with the sun and true north. Only 5,000 sundial coins are available

The Mint’s annual Remembrance Day coin also made its debut, continuing the tradition of honouring Canadian service members past and present. The coin’s reverse features the iconic red poppy—a symbol of sacrifice dating back to the First World War. “Selective use of colour puts focus on the red poppies that represent Canadian combatants, as well as the fallen,” the Mint explained, emphasizing the vivid design details that enhance its tribute.

Celebrating another Canadian icon, the Treasured Maple Leaf series features several new releases for 2025, each adorned with a privy mark and featuring the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The Mint described these coins as “made for celebrating life’s memorable moments” and highlighted their value as both gifts and collectibles.

The new releases include:

  • A one-ounce 99.99 per cent pure silver coin featuring the Polar Bears privy mark, with a limited mintage of 25,000 coins.
  • A one-tenth-ounce 99.99 per cent pure gold coin also featuring the Polar Bears privy mark, with a mintage limited to 5,000 coins.
  • A one-ounce 99.99 per cent pure silver coin with the Congratulations! privy mark, also limited to 25,000 coins.
  • A one-ounce 99.99 per cent pure silver coin celebrating the Year of the Snake, with a privy mark and a limited mintage of 25,000 coins.

A tribute to one of Canada’s most beloved maritime icons, the Tribute W Mint Mark – Bluenose coin, revisits Emanuel Hahn’s timeless design of the 10-cent coin. “Hahn’s beloved depiction of Bluenose is re-created here in 99.99 per cent pure silver,” the Mint noted, emphasizing the tailored specimen finish that pays homage to this Nova Scotia schooner and Canada’s maritime heritage.

Finally, Heraldic Landscape: Birds of Canada represents a rich tapestry of the nation’s heraldic symbols. Available in both a five-ounce version with a mintage of 1,300 coins and a kilo version limited to 100 coins, the coin features intricate frostings that highlight the finely engraved details. “Celebrate Canada through this rich tapestry of emblems and heraldic elements,” the Mint stated, noting that the design brings together some of Canada’s most notable emblems in a powerful portrait of national pride.
