George Anthony Smith, a passionate numismatist and well-known coin dealer in Hamilton, Ont., passed away on Nov. 15 at the age of 78.
An active member of the coin-collecting community, Smith practiced his profession with skill and dedication from 1972 until his death, leaving behind a legacy deeply tied to history, rare coins, and fine watches.
Smith was born in Gateshead, England, on Oct. 19, 1945. He spent his formative years in Newcastle upon Tyne before immigrating to Canada in 1957 at the age of 11 with his family aboard the Seven Seas.
An active member of the Manitoba Coin Club for many years, Smith cultivated a reputation as a knowledgeable and enthusiastic dealer, contributing to the broader numismatic community across Canada. His passion for rare coins reflected his love for history, a subject he cherished and explored throughout his life.
In addition to his numismatic career, Smith had a background as a tailor, operating two shops in Hamilton: Woolco Plaza on Upper James Street and the Den for Men in downtown Hamilton. This dual expertise showcased his commitment to craftsmanship and quality, traits he brought to both his tailoring and coin-dealing endeavors.
Smith’s life was shaped by a rich and diverse heritage. He was the son of Antionette Marie Smith (née Pirally), born in Port Said, Egypt, and Pte. George Edward Smith, a member of the Durham Light Infantry from Gateshead, England. He often reflected fondly on his childhood in England and summers spent in Italy with his grandmother, memories he cherished and shared widely.
Smith is survived by his daughters, Coleen Gallant and Elaine Smith, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is predeceased by his son, Alexander Smith, his older brother Jeffrey Smith, and his youngest sister Vivian. His surviving siblings include sisters Jacqueline, Wanda, Valerie, and Ginette.
Known for his warmth, knowledge, and dedication, Smith’s presence will be deeply missed by those who knew him in both personal and professional capacities. His contributions to the Canadian numismatic community and his enduring passion for history leave an indelible mark.
