At this April’s Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA) Convention in Hamilton, the hometown Hamilton Coin Society (HCS) offered a jar giveaway to show-goers, who were invited to guess how many one-cent coins were held within the container. After sitting at the HCS booth throughout the convention, member Len Trakalo made the closest guess before receiving the jar – plus its contents, including 2,317 cents totalling $29.17 – at the club’s April 10 meeting.
“It was great to see members of the Hamilton Coin Society and old friends from all over North America gather together,” HCS newsletter editor Alan Roy wrote in the club’s April issue. Also the club’s archivist, Roy is investigating past ONA Convention medals, including one possibly issued for the 1981 gathering hosted by the Niagara Falls Coin Club at the Skylon Tower. “I wonder what sort of award the exhibitors received,” wrote Roy. “I have not been able to determine why a medal was not made for this convention.” If you have details about the 1981 ONA medal, contact Roy at alroy477@gmail.com.
