Bilingual seminar for writers, editors to be offered at upcoming RCNA Convention

We’re only one week away from this year’s Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) Convention, which will be taking over Boucherville, Qué. from July 18-23.

The convention is being organized by host club l’Association des Numismates et des Philatélistes de Boucherville (ANPB), which has previously organized the RCNA’s annual gathering in Montréal in 1992 and 1996. This year’s show is being held at Hôtel Mortagne on 1228 Nobel St. in Boucherville, which is just east of Montréal on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River.

The bourse and exhibit hall will be open to the public on July 21 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; July 22 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; July 23 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. In addition to more than 60 dealer tables, the convention will also boast an extensive auction, a vast offering of competitive exhibits, an educational symposium and a variety of meetings, presentations and social gatherings throughout the six-day event. See below for a full schedule of events.

The Royal Canadian Mint will be hosting a coin exchange on July 22 in conjunction with this year’s convention.

CANEW SEMINAR

If you’re a writer, or if you’re at all interested in writing, one of the highlights of the convention will be the Canadian Association of Numismatic Editors and Writers (CANEW) seminar.

During its July 22 meeting, CANEW will offer a bilingual seminar exploring the various tools that are available to writers and editors to improve their craft or “simply to make their lives easier,” according to organizers.

CANEW was formed last year to facilitate the sharing of knowledge between its members. Award-winning writers and editors who are members of CANEW are also willing to mentor newcomers to this area of the hobby.

For more information about CANEW, contact Serge Pelletier at pelletier@canew.club.

MINT BOOTH, COIN EXCHANGE

The Royal Canadian Mint will be manning a booth on the bourse throughout this year’s convention, which is open to the public from July 21-23. At the booth, show-goers will be able to browse and purchase the Mint’s most recent releases, meet one of its acclaimed artists, and participate in a coin exchange.

On July 22 from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and again from 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m., convention attendees will be able to meet artist Jean-Charles Daumas, who most recently designed coins from the Mint’s five-coin “Birds Among Nature’s Colours” series.

From 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., the Mint will host a coin exchange, where collectors will be able to trade their spare change for coloured and uncoloured versions of the 25-cent “My Canada, My Inspiration” circulation coins. There will be a limit of four coins a customer while supplies last.

The 25-cent “Hope for a Green Future” coin shares eight-year-old designer Joelle Wong’s hope that Canada’s plants, animals and abundant nature will be protected and thrive in the future. The reverse design depicts a pair of hands bringing life to a plant that connects all living things—represented by some notable Canadian animals.

Wong, of Richmond Hill, Ont., was one of five Canadians to win the My Canada, My Inspiration design contest. Wong’s design was chosen as the winner of the “Canada’s Future” theme.
