Fake North Korean banknotes discovered in South Korea

After a pile of counterfeit North Korean banknotes were discovered in South Korea, authorities are considering the possibility of defectors in their midst.

The nearly 150-kilogram hoard of fake notes was discovered in a pile of old newspapers at a thrift store in southwestern Seoul. The forged notes were printed in the 5000 North Korean won denomination.

According to UPI, South Korean police are investigating the interesting discovery and believe it could have been left behind by one or more defectors.

If they weren’t counterfeit, each of the 5000 North Korean won banknotes would be worth about $7.10 Cdn.
