COVID-19 coins struck in Italy

Soon after the World Health Organization designated the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, a private coin issuer in Italy began selling what are believed to be the world’s first coronavirus coins.

A 10-yuan one-ounce Fine silver coin offered by Powercoin – with a limited mintage of only 100 – features what it calls a “wonderful colouration” and a glow-in-the-dark effect. An image of the virus seemingly infecting the planet Earth appears on the reverse while the temple of the Forbidden City and 2020 year-date are on the obverse.

Originally offered for €139.95 (about $220 Cdn.), the coin quickly sold out.

Another one-ounce Fine silver coin is hopeful about science’s ability to remedy the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘GOODBYE COVID-19’

Another 10-yuan one-ounce Fine silver coin depicts “the wish for the science’s victory against the unstoppable coronavirus,” according to Powercoin. The reverse features a gun connected to a microscope “that symbolically destroys the virus in a thousand pieces,” it added. The obverse also depicts the Forbidden City plus the 2020 year-date.

Also with a mintage of 100, it’s being offered for €99.95 (about $150 Cdn.).
