Stack’s Bowers Galleries will offer the first part of The Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins and Paper Money this January in New York City.
The collection will be featured alongside other world coins and paper money as part of the firm’s official auction of the 2018 New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC). The sale of the Eldorado Collection is scheduled for Jan. 12-13, 2018, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City, which is only about six hours from the Canada-U.S. border in Fort Erie, Ont. The sale will be followed by several other offerings from The Eldorado Collection next year.
According to auctioneers, The Eldorado Collection represents a multi-generational effort to build the finest possible collection of Colombian numismatic items. The coin collection was built with a special focus on gold from Gran Colombia, including the rare and popular issues of Ecuador. From the founding of the mint at Santa Fe de Bogota in 1622 to low mintage issues of the modern era, the Eldorado Collection encompasses the coins of colonial Spain as well as independent Colombia in every manifestation from the United Provinces of New Granada to the modern day Republic.
COLLECTION SPANS TWO CENTURIES
The Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money includes paper money issued more than 200 years. This collection—the finest-ever offering of its kind, according to auctioneers—examines Colombia’s broad range of genres, series, issuers, and themes. The notes cataloged in this sale and in future Eldorado sales are “perhaps the most fascinating in all Latin America,” reads a statement issued by the auction house.
