A scarce Canadian gold coin will headline this year’s CAFNE Silent Auction, set to take place during the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) Convention in Calgary on Thursday, July 17.
Donated by veteran numismatist Michael S. Turrini of Vallejo, Calif., the featured item is a 1999 $2 gold coin struck in 22-karat gold and depicting the Inuit Drum Dance. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint with a limited mintage of just 4,298, the coin is housed in its original Mint packaging and includes a certificate of authenticity. It carries an estimated value of $800 to $1,000.
The silent auction will be held during the annual reception hosted by the Canadian Association for Numismatic Education (CAFNE) at the University of Calgary’s Nickle Galleries. In addition to the gold coin, other highlights include a lead strike of the official 2025 RCNA convention medal and a wide selection of numismatic material geared toward collectors of all experience levels.
Advance registration is required to attend the CAFNE reception. Interested attendees can register through the RCNA 2025 Convention form available at www.rcna.ca.
Proceeds from the auction will support CAFNE’s educational initiatives, including public outreach, numismatic research, and scholarships in Canadian numismatics.
