A rare 1945 $1 “5 Over 5” overdate with a “Doubled HP” variety brought $11,400 US (about $15,275 Cdn.) as the top-earning coin of the June 4 Canada World Coins Showcase Auction by Heritage Auctions.
The George VI coin was certified as Mint State-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).
It stands as a “strikingly fine example, bathed in eye-catching cerulean and royal purple toning propelled to an elevated visual aesthetic by the ample underlying luminosity of the fields,” according to auctioneers.
The lot description adds the coin is “presently the sole occupant at the terminal grade in PCGS census and a fitting centrepiece to a well-advanced collection of Canadian silver dollars.”
