10-kilo gold coin highlights Mint’s Opulence Collection

The Royal Canadian Mint has launched its 2024 Opulence Collection, headlined by a one-of-a-kind 10-kilogram gold coin inspired by Pacific Northwest Coast art.

Titled The Dance Screen (The Scream Too), the coin was designed by Haida master carver Chief 7IDANsuu (James Hart) and features intricate details along with genuine abalone inlays. The collection, which includes limited-edition platinum coins and a diamond-adorned gold piece, showcases the Mint’s craftsmanship. However, these items are intended for a niche market of collectors, given their high price points and exclusive designs.

The 10-kilogram pure gold coin, The Dance Screen (The Scream Too), is based on a large red cedar panel carved by Chief 7IDANsuu. The design features Haida figures, including the Shaman, Raven, Eagle, Orca, and others, all honouring the central role of the salmon in the natural and cultural life of the Haida people. Six abalone shells are inlaid around the coin’s edge, evoking traditional Haida copper shields, which symbolize wealth.

The obverse of the coin bears the effigy of King Charles III, surrounded by elements from the original carving. The coin will be auctioned through Heffel Fine Art Auction House on Nov. 20, 2024.

Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Mint, noted the significance of this particular coin. “We are proud to see our skill showcased on rare and luxurious works of numismatic art, especially on this one-of-a-kind gold masterpiece that honours the spirit and talent of master Haida carver Chief 7IDANsuu,” Lemay said.

Only 38 one-kilogram coins, made from 99.95 per cent pure platinum, feature the The Dance Screen (The Scream Too) design.

In addition to the gold coin, the Opulence Collection includes 38 limited-edition platinum coins, each weighing one kilogram and retailing for $89,999. These 99.95 per cent pure platinum coins also feature the same design by Chief 7IDANsuu and are enhanced with shimmering abalone inlays. Each platinum coin comes with a certification of authenticity and a custom display case.

The collection is rounded out by the $500 Purely Brilliant gold coin. Made from five ounces of 99.99 per cent pure gold, the coin is adorned with 3.4 carats of Canadian diamonds, including five Ideal Cut diamonds in various shapes. The coin is limited to a mintage of only 20 and is priced at $99,995.

The final offering in the 2024 Opulence Collection is the $500 Purely Brilliant gold coin, crafted from 5 oz. of 99.99 per cent pure gold and limited to a mintage of just 20.

The Mint stated the 2024 Opulence Collection demonstrates the its continued commitment to showcasing Canadian artistry through its numismatic products. While these coins represent significant artistic achievements, their limited availability and price place them in the luxury collectibles category. The ten-kilogram gold coin will be auctioned on Nov. 20, 2024, while the other coins in the collection are available for direct purchase through the Mint.
