Ontario Numismatist Steve Van Bree dies at 63

Long-time Ontario numismatist Steve Van Bree, a familiar face at coin shows and conventions across the province and a Life Member of the Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA), died suddenly on Aug. 11. He was 63.

Coins were a lifelong passion for Van Bree, who became well known among collectors through his regular appearances on the Ontario show circuit. He enjoyed collecting and researching coins and spending time with others who shared his enthusiasm for the hobby. Over the years, he also participated as a dealer at various shows, including ONA conventions. A 2017 ONA convention bourse directory, for example, lists Van Bree with Southwestern Ontario Coin of Strathroy.

Van Bree was also a long-standing member of the ONA. Robb McPherson, secretary-treasurer of the association, told Canadian Coin News that Van Bree joined in 1996 as Member 1609 and became Life Member 101 in January 1998.

His passion for coins remained an important part of his life. After retiring in 2025 from his career as a welder and fabricator, Van Bree had more time to devote to numismatics and the hobby community he had been part of for decades. His quiet and friendly manner made him a familiar presence to collectors and others who encountered him at shows.

Born Dec. 8, 1962, Van Bree was the youngest of four sons of Tony and Mary Van Bree. His death came just 15 days after the death of his brother Larry. He is survived by his brothers Ron and Joe, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate the lives of Steve and Larry Van Bree on Aug. 27 from 1-3 p.m. at Denning’s of Strathroy, 32 Metcalfe St. W. A joint memorial service will follow at 3 p.m., with a reception afterward. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Order of Alhambra.
