The Fred Weinberg Coin Die Collection topped $145,000 US (about $190,000 Cdn.) on May 2 as 308 bidders vied for 261 lots through the Texas-based Heritage Auctions.

The namesake collection of dealer and U.S. Mint error specialist Fred Weinberg, of Encino, Calif., it featured cancelled and uncancelled dies, collars and punched planchet strips for coins, tokens, medals, including some Canadian material.

Lot 91253 offered a punched strip used for Canada’s nickel 50-cent coin from 1968-99. Certified as genuine by Professional Coin Grading Service, it brought $192 US (about $250 Cdn.), including buyer’s premium.
