London Coin Centre (LCC) will present a diverse offering of coins, banknotes and militaria in its May 9-10 auction, with a notable emphasis on world coinage.
Owner Tomasz Machaj said the firm continues to build its strength in international material. “We are trying to really focus on world coins,” he said, noting particularly strong representation of Mexico, Poland, Russia and issues associated with Pope John Paul II.
Among the Canadian highlights is an 1870 Dominion of Canada $2 note payable at Toronto (BC-3b), offered in Very Good condition. A foundational issue of Canada’s early paper money system, the note remains difficult to obtain in any grade and opens with a starting bid of $800.
World material features prominently throughout the sale, including an ancient Greek silver tetradrachm struck in the name of Alexander III “the Great,” dating to the late fourth century BC. Issued under Demetrios I Poliorketes and offered in Extremely Fine condition, the coin displays the classic imagery of Herakles and Zeus and opens at $100.
Also of note is a 1628 Polish talar of Zygmunt III Vasa, struck at Bydgoszcz and presented in About Uncirculated condition. The piece is distinguished by double-struck legends and a rare variety, with strong detail and lustre expected to attract collectors of early European coinage.
Additional highlights include an 1857 United States Seated Liberty 25-cent piece graded PCGS MS-66 with mirror-like fields, opening at $2,000, and an 1897 Cuban silver one peso souvenir issue with a mintage of 4,286, offered in Extremely Fine condition with a starting bid of $50.
The auction will be held in two sessions. Session 1, beginning May 9 at 10 a.m., features Canadian, U.S. and militaria material, including 284 Canadian coin lots, 69 Canadian banknotes, 166 U.S. coins and 121 militaria items, along with exonumia and Royal Canadian Mint issues. Session 2, beginning May 10 at 10 a.m., is dedicated to world material, offering 977 world coin lots and a selection of world banknotes.
