The Royal Mint has unveiled a new £2 coin celebrating the Duchess of Hamilton, one of Britain’s most famous steam locomotives and a standout icon of the country’s railway heritage.
Introduced in 1938 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, the streamlined locomotive became synonymous with luxury rail travel during the height of Britain’s steam era. Designed to operate express passenger routes between London and Glasgow, the Duchess of Hamilton gained international recognition for its sleek Art Deco appearance and engineering performance.
The new commemorative coin features a dynamic depiction of the locomotive by artist Gary Breeze, showcasing the engine in full motion with its distinctive streamlined casing.
Today, the Duchess of Hamilton is preserved by the National Railway Museum, where it remains one of the institution’s most recognizable locomotives. The Royal Mint said proceeds connected to the release will support the museum’s ongoing preservation and educational work.
Collectors can purchase the coin in a range of finishes, including Brilliant Uncirculated, silver Proof Colour and gold Proof editions. Special presentation packaging explores the locomotive’s history and legacy within British rail transportation.
