Deadpool, Wolverine featured on RCM-struck rounds

Two of Marvel’s best-known Canadian characters are the subjects of a new series of gold and silver collectibles struck by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Deadpool and Wolverine appear on three limited-mintage precious-metal rounds produced in collaboration with Agoro, a licensed precious-metals collectibles company. Unlike the Mint’s regular collector issues, the pieces have no denomination and are not legal tender.

The release draws on the fictional Canadian origins of both characters. Wolverine, whose real name is James Howlett, was born in Alberta, while Wade Wilson — better known as Deadpool — has Canadian roots tied to Saskatchewan.

Heading the release is a quarter-ounce piece containing 99.99 per cent pure gold and featuring both characters. Its mintage is limited to 1,500 pieces.

Two separate one-ounce rounds struck in 99.99 per cent pure silver feature Deadpool and Wolverine individually. Each has a worldwide mintage of 10,000.

The designs combine colour with engraved details, including maple-leaf elements emphasizing the characters’ Canadian connection. The pieces were designed by Agoro and manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The project represents another use of the Mint’s production facilities beyond Canadian circulation and legal-tender collector coins. The RCM also manufactures circulation coins for foreign governments and produces medals, tokens and other numismatic products for outside clients.

The Deadpool and Wolverine pieces are being marketed as precious-metal collectibles rather than Canadian coins, an important distinction for collectors accustomed to the Mint’s denominated Marvel and other pop-culture issues.

The new collectibles were released Oct. 6 and are being distributed through Agoro and participating dealers.
