The Nickle Galleries at the University of Calgary is currently hosting an exhibit entitled “What is Money?”
Curated by Marina Fischer with assistance from Justine Buchler and running until Sept. 8, the exhibit features ethnographic objects from the galleries’ numismatic collection and showcases diverse forms of money used across the globe through time. From some of the earliest minted metals of the ancient world to Chinese knife money and African metalwork; Canadian Northwest Coast copper shields; and unique stone money from the Island of Yap, the exhibition explores a range of cultural understandings of money and its value in society.
