Charlton’s 78th edition of Volume 1 arrives

The 2026 Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins, Volume One, has arrived at Canadian Coin News, landing on Dec. 4 after an expected delivery date of Nov. 28. Copies will now begin making their way to dealers and collectors who have been waiting for the new edition.

First published in 1952, the Charlton Standard Catalogue has been a familiar reference on Canadian collectors’ shelves for more than seven decades. Originating with James E. Charlton’s catalogue of Canadian coins, tokens and fractional currency, it quickly became one of the core tools used to identify and study Canadian numismatic issues.

As the hobby grew and the series expanded, the line was divided into separate volumes. Volume One is devoted to numismatic issues, covering business strikes, commemoratives and Canadian legal tender coinage from the 19th century to the present. It is used alongside other guides and pricing tools, including the Trends listings published in Canadian Coin News, to give collectors and dealers a fuller picture of the market.

With gold and silver prices rising sharply this year, Trends editor Michael Findlay has been working feverishly to reflect those changes, updating values where bullion movements and market activity have had a clear impact on numismatic coins. The new Charlton volume will sit alongside Trends as another reference point for collectors tracking an active price environment.

Collectors value Charlton for its structured presentation of dates, mintages, varieties and images, organized in a format that is practical to use at shows, in shops or at home. The catalogue is updated annually, with each edition reflecting new information and revisions drawn from ongoing research and market activity. As Canadian Coin News is published 26 times a year, Trends is updated regularly.

Now in its 78th edition, the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins continues to serve as a long-running identification and reference guide for Canadian material. With the 2026 volume finally in hand, collectors have another updated resource to use alongside Trends and other publications as they navigate an active and often changing Canadian coin market.
