Watch the World Cup — and your change

As Team Canada prepares to play its opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match on home soil Friday, collectors may want to keep an eye on more than the action on the pitch.

Millions of commemorative FIFA World Cup loonies are now entering circulation across Canada, offering a tangible reminder of the country’s role as co-host of the world’s largest sporting event.

Canada opens its tournament Friday at Toronto’s BMO Field before continuing group-stage play in Vancouver. The matches mark a historic milestone for Canadian soccer, with Canada serving as a host nation alongside the United States and Mexico in the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams.

The Royal Canadian Mint released the commemorative circulation dollar on May 14 to celebrate Canada’s participation in the tournament. The Mint is issuing three million examples of the coin, including two million colourized pieces, which are now making their way into circulation as banks and businesses replenish their supplies of loonies.

For collectors, the issue offers a unique opportunity to obtain a major commemorative coin directly from circulation. Unlike many collector coins sold through the Mint, the FIFA dollar can potentially be found in pocket change, bank rolls and cash transactions across the country.

Designed by Ontario artist Glen Green, the coin features a soccer-themed design incorporating a stylized soccer ball and maple leaf, symbolizing Canada’s role as a host nation. The colourized version includes red accents highlighting the design’s connection to Canada.

The circulation issue is part of a broader FIFA World Cup coin program unveiled by the Mint earlier this year. While collector versions are available through traditional numismatic channels, the circulation dollar was specifically created to place a World Cup keepsake in the hands of everyday Canadians.

The release continues a long tradition of Canadian circulation commemoratives marking important national and international events. Previous circulating commemorative coins have celebrated milestones ranging from the Olympic Games and military anniversaries to royal occasions and achievements in Canadian history.

With international attention focused on Canada throughout the tournament, the World Cup loonie serves as both a collectible and a reminder of a sporting event that will bring millions of fans to Canadian stadiums and introduce the country to a global television audience.

As Canadians tune in to watch Team Canada begin its World Cup campaign Friday, collectors may want to check their change as well. One of the newest additions to Canadian circulating coinage could already be sitting in a cash register, bank roll or pocket nearby.
