Gold and silver surge fuels strong demand at CAND show

Gold and silver are commanding growing attention from collectors across Canada, a trend clearly visible at the recent Canadian Association of Numismatic Dealers convention and coin show, where record opening-day attendance and strong dealer sales reflected heightened interest in precious metals.

Dealers reported brisk demand for both gold and silver material, with bullion products and precious-metal coins among the most actively traded items on the floor. Many collectors pointed to gold and silver’s role as a safe haven amid ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainty, a sentiment increasingly shaping buying patterns at coin shows nationwide.

That enthusiasm mirrors broader global market forces that have pushed precious metals to historic highs. Gold and silver have surged in recent weeks amid continued safe-haven demand, currency pressures, central-bank buying and shifting expectations around interest rates, renewing interest in tangible assets with intrinsic value.

From a Canadian perspective, the rally has been especially pronounced. As of 1:30 p.m. EST today, gold was trading at about $7,200 an ounce in Canadian dollars, while silver was near $155 an ounce, reflecting both rising metal prices and currency effects.

Silver’s gains have been particularly notable on a percentage basis, supported not only by investor demand but also by strong industrial use tied to renewable energy, electrification and data-centre infrastructure. That dual role has historically contributed to greater volatility, a factor analysts continue to watch closely.

For collectors and dealers alike, elevated bullion prices are influencing behaviour on the bourse floor. While bullion coins remain closely tied to metal values, rising prices are also prompting renewed interest in scarcer numismatic material, as collectors reassess value in a high-price environment where gold and silver continue to play a central role.

Ontario collectors will have another opportunity to acquire bullion this Sunday at the Paris Coin Show. See the related story elsewhere on this website for details.
