The Royal Mint’s modern collector issues will take centre stage in Auction XX on Dec. 10, where a range of its recent gold proofs, piedfort sets and early Charles III coins will be offered through U.K. auction firm Sovereign Rarities.
The sale showcases some of the Mint’s most sought-after contemporary designs, from Great Engravers and Queen’s Beasts pieces to low-mintage Kew Gardens and 2019 piedfort 50-cent sets.
Leading the modern section are several five-ounce gold proofs from the Royal Mint’s Great Engravers series, alongside a Queen’s Beasts five-ounce gold proof “Completer” coin certified NGC PF-70 Ultra Cameo. Its two-ounce gold proof counterpart, also graded PF-70 Ultra Cameo, is included in the same offering, giving collectors a chance to acquire matched top-graded examples from one of the Royal Mint’s best-known modern programs.
The sale also features some of the Royal Mint’s most sought-after modern designs in smaller formats. A Kew Gardens 50-pence piece, graded NGC PF-70 Ultra Cameo, is joined by the 2019 gold proof piedfort 50-pence British Culture and Military sets, each limited to a mintage of just 44 pieces. These low-issue piedforts bring an added level of scarcity to designs that already attract strong interest from thematic and modern British specialists.
Recent Charles III coinage is represented by a coronation two-ounce gold proof graded NGC PF-70 Ultra Cameo, a Royal Arms gold proof £5 crown with a First Day of Issue designation and a coronation struck-on-the-day sovereign. Together, they illustrate the Royal Mint’s transition into the new reign and the growing range of collector-focused issues bearing the King’s portrait.
While the auction includes earlier British pieces, world coins and medals, Sovereign Rarities notes that the modern Royal Mint proofs and gold issues form one of the catalogue’s central themes. Pre-bidding is open, and the live sale will begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 10. The full auction listing is available on the Sovereign Rarities website.
