The J. Douglas Ferguson Historical Research Foundation has announced a major $250,000 donation in memory of the late Geoffrey Bell, one of Canada’s most respected numismatists, dealers, and educators.
The landmark announcement was made by the Ferguson Foundation and the Bell family at a news conference today in Calgary, held during the annual convention of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA).

Pledged over five years by the Bell family, the gift will fund the continued expansion of the Foundation’s online research portal, which will now be renamed the Geoffrey Bell Canadian Numismatic Resources (GBCNR).
“For Dad, collecting was never just about the items—it was about the stories they told and the knowledge they sparked,” said Brian Bell. “Supporting the growth of this resource is a heartfelt way to keep his spirit alive in the community he loved so much.”
Robert Forbes, Chair of the Ferguson Foundation, called the donation both meaningful and inspiring: “Geoff strongly believed in the importance of making numismatic research accessible. It’s wonderful to see his family honour his legacy in a way that will benefit collectors and researchers for years to come.”
The digital archive will continue to grow as a key reference tool for collectors, researchers, and historians seeking access to Canada’s rich numismatic heritage.
Geoff Bell, who passed away in July 2024, was a long-time Foundation director and past chair. He served as RCNA President, received the J. Douglas Ferguson Award in 1987, and was named Honorary President of the RCNA in 2024. Beyond accolades, he was known as a mentor, educator, and driving force in shaping the national collecting landscape.
