Royal Mint uncovers the stories behind everyday coins

The United Kingdom’s Royal Mint Museum has released its second podcast series, The Secret Life of Coins, which launched Sept. 30 across all major podcast platforms, including Spotify and Apple.

The new series explores unusual and fascinating ways coins have been used beyond their role as currency, from political protest and timekeeping to magic, healing and superstition.

Museum director Kevin Clancy said the project reflects the museum’s effort to reach wider audiences. “In an era of strained budgets and contested narratives, reaching and engaging with new audiences has never been more important for museums,” he said. “Following the success of last year’s Coins and the Sea podcast, our team has been hard at work developing this second series to connect with a more digitally focused audience.”

The Royal Mint Museum collaborated with experts and institutions from across Britain, including the Houses of Parliament, the Foundling Museum and historian Helen Pankhurst.

The Secret Life of Coins forms part of a broader museum initiative of the same name, which includes an exhibition at the Royal Mint Experience in South Wales. Collectors can listen to the podcast directly through the Royal Mint Museum website at royalmintmuseum.org.uk/podcast.
