U.K. 50 pence sells for more than $1,000

One of the U.K.’s rarest modern coins—the 2011 50-pence Olympic Triathlon coin—recently sold on eBay for £600 (about $1,045 Cdn.).

Designed by Sarah Harvey, the coin depicts a runner, a cyclist and a swimmer on its reverse to commemorate the triathlon’s three disciplines. According to the Change Checker’s50p Scarcity Index,” which analyzes the Royal Mint’s releases from the fourth quarter of 2017, the coin has a scarcity rating of 79.

The scarcity index ranks coins from one to 100 with one being the least scarce and 100 being the most scarce.

The Olympic Triathlon coin, which was offered by user “nicoljenkin46,” was purchased for £600 after one bid last November.
