The Canadian Numismatic Company (TCNC) will hold its Militaria Sale on Sept. 23–24, offering 640 lots that span more than a century of history. The catalogue ranges from Waterloo medals and colonial honours to Second World War gallantry awards and Canadian academic distinctions.
Among the early offerings is Lot 1, a Canadian General Service Medal named to Pte. T.J. Wheeler of the 2nd Provisional Battalion with a Fenian Raid 1866 clasp, a piece tied to the Quebec Rifles and Red River Rebellion. Lot 5 features a four-medal grouping to Corpl. Richard Young, highlighted by a Queen’s South Africa Medal with five clasps alongside a First World War pair and a Royal Canadian Humane Association Medal for saving three people from drowning in 1911.
Waterloo medals stand out in Lots 21 and 22, including the 1815 issue awarded to Lieut. Abraham Dent of the 59th Regiment of Foot, who later perished in the wreck of The Seahorse, and another to Soldat Christian Klusmann of the Landwehr Battalion Hildesheim, part of Wellington’s left flank during the battle.
The Second World War is represented by Lot 25, a framed commemorative grouping for Leading Seaman James Magennis, V.C., the only native of Northern Ireland to receive the Victoria Cross, while Lot 26 highlights Britain’s colonial era with medals awarded to Sir Charles Cecil Farquharson Dundas, governor of the Bahamas and Uganda. Canadian highlights include Lot 528, a Victorian-era British Columbia Garrison Artillery officer’s sabretache, pouch and belt, and Lot 608, an 1877 Gold University of Manitoba Medal awarded to Edmund Henry Botterell, who later became professor of surgical neurology at Queen’s University.
Bidding is now open at auctions.canadiancoinsandpapermoney.com, with auctioneer Marc Verret encouraging collectors to review the diverse catalogue that “should make some nice moments and active evenings of auctioning.”
