Collection of rare Mormon coins, banknotes offered by Utah dealer

Salt Lake City’s Rust Rare Coin is offering upwards of 600 pieces of historical money, including early Mormon coins and banknotes worth an estimated $1.5 million USD (about $1.92 million Cdn.).

The array of Mormon money, which was issued both before and during the religious group’s visit to Salt Lake City, is being displayed and sold at the Rust Rare Coin showroom in Salt Lake City.

Dealer John Rust told The Salt Lake Tribune the vast collection was assembled by a Utah-based father-and-son duo throughout four decades. Rust also explained the various items were produced by Mormon settlers, who needed it to exchange goods and services while there was a lack of federally issued money in the latter half of the 19th century.

Among the highlights of the collection is a Nauvoo City $1 scrip with an estimated value of $18,750 USD (about $24,100 Cdn.).
