OTD: Canada’s first coin club founded in Montréal

On today’s date in 1862, Canada’s first coin club – La Société de numismatique de Montréal – was founded in Montréal, Qué.

One of the club’s founding members, Adélard Boucher, was named president.

The club wished to promote the study of numismatics; however, after combining archaeological studies into its activities, it changed its name to the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society in 1866.

In 1870, the society was incorporated by Act of Parliament, and it was publicly acknowledged by an annual grant from the Québec Legislature.

From 1872, the society published the Canadian Antiquarian and Numismatic Journal for six decades (albeit irregularly at times).
