A contest to determine the reverse design of the 57th annual Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA) Convention medal has begun.
The 2019 ONA Convention is returning to Kingston, Ont., next April 12-14 and will be held at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre on 1550 Princess St. Surrounded by the Marshland Conservation Area, the hotel is only minutes away from many of the city’s attractions, including the Kingston Penitentiary, Fort Henry National Historic Site and the Bellevue House National Historic Site of Canada (prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald’s former home).
“Keep in mind that the portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald was used on the 2010 medal so everything except that topic is open for consideration,” said ONA Treasurer Robb McPherson, who’s also the association’s past president.
DESIGN COMPETITION DETAILS
- Participation is open to all ONA members in good standing.
- Entries must be received by the convention committee no later than Aug. 31.
- All decisions of the convention committee are final.
- Each entry must represent only one design. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted by the same person. Designs submitted by ONA members in previous year’s ONA design competition may be updated and submitted again this year.
- All entries shall include a short write-up explaining the meaning of the design as well as artwork of sufficient detail to give the judging committee a clear idea of the proposed design elements, legend and layout. Submissions can be made physically or electronically.
- Entries shall include artwork of about six inches in diameter in at least one of the following formats:
- Line drawing—freehand or otherwise—clearly depicting the design elements
- “Paste-up” image, including the proposed image and legend
- The committee is not judging the artistic competence of the submission material itself but rather its potential as struck in a medal that will be engraved by a master engraver from the chosen minting facility. The material must be of sufficient detail to give the engraver suitable guidance to execute your design.
- The winning designer will be notified by Sept. 15. The winner will receive a lead splash of the medal, the only other splash example being in the ONA archives.
- By submitting a design for consideration, the designer grants the ONA exclusive rights to the design and agrees the design and any derivative works can be used for, but not limited to, the medal and any promotional materials produced by or on behalf of the ONA.
- Submissions made by persons under the age of majority must be accompanied by a parent or guardian’s signed consent.
DESIGN GUIDELINES
A successful design will:
- celebrate something relating to City of Kingston or general area;
- contain a main design element(s) that appears three-dimensional in nature with reasonably high but not ultra-high relief features;
- include the lettering “57th Annual O.N.A. Convention” above and “Host Ontario Numismatic Association” below; and
- include within the design the dates and location of the convention, “April 12-14, 2019 – Kingston, Ontario.”
FINAL SPECIFICATIONS
- The final medal will be 38 millimetres in diameter with the silver weighing about one ounce and struck with a Proof-like finish.
- The three-dimensional design elements will have a cameo (frosted) appearance against mirror-like fields.
- The metal composition for the medals is yet to be chosen but is likely to be any of silver, cartridge brass and copper or commercial bronze.
- The obverse will feature the common ONA design used on previous convention medals.
