New Issue: RCM celebrates national pride in fifth numismatic catalogue of 2018

In its fifth numismatic catalogue of 2018, the Royal Canadian Mint is celebrating Captain Canuck on a $20 Fine silver coin celebrating the imposing red-and-white-clad superhero as he looked when he burst onto the comic book scene in 1975.

Designed by creator Richard Comely, the rectangular-shaped coin is a perfect canvas for the image of Captain Canuck, who’s depicted standing guard before the land he is sworn to protect. Utilizing the rectangular shape, the reverse mimics the appearance of the cover of Captain Canuck No. 1. Key elements from the original cover art by Richard Comely are replicated with a primary focus on Captain Canuck, who strikes a defiant pose as he stands on rugged terrain, while the yellow sun hangs low in the northern sky. His maple leaf suit is based on the real-life colours of the large Canadian flag engraved behind him, which further emphasizes the character’s Canadian roots.

The reverse includes the engraved word “CANADA” above a corner box element bearing the face value “20 DOLLARS.” “CAPTAIN CANUCK” and “CAPITAINE CANUCK” are engraved on either side of the hero while the year “2018” is engraved on the land mass below. A laser-engraved maple leaf pattern fills the obverse, which features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

The coin has a weight of 31.56 grams; a diameter of 49.80 millimetres by 28.60 millimetres; and a mintage of 3,500 pieces.

The Mint also issued a maple leaf-shaped $20 pure silver coin celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Silver Maple Leaf (SML).

TRIO OF TRIBUTES

As 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of one of the world’s best-selling silver bullion coins, the Silver Maple Leaf (SML), the Mint has released a trio of numismatic tributes.

In a Mint first, a $200 pure gold coin, “30th Anniversary of the SML,” is a double-incuse, 99.999 per cent gold coin with platinum plating over the iconic sugar maple design found on its reverse.

The trio is rounded out by the maple leaf-shaped $20 pure silver coin and a three-ounce $50 silver coin, both of which were struck with double-incuse designs.

REMAINING MAY COINS

Another coin celebrating the SML, this a $200 pure gold coin, was also issued as part of the May catalogue.

Other coins issued as part of the May numismatic catalogue, which was available as of yesterday, include:

  • a $250 pure gold coin, “The Magnificent Maple,” enhanced by a genuine Canadian diamond and featuring artist Virginia Boulay’s artful perspective of maple leaves in nearly two ounces of 99.99 per cent gold;
