Featuring an antiqued finish, a $2 pure silver coin recently issued by Australia’s Perth Mint is inset with an operational dial thermometer featuring both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales.
Struck in two ounces of pure silver, the coin also features Aztec style patterns and iconography, including the circular Aztec agricultural (or solar) calendar depictions of gods believed to help govern the weather and temperature. The design also includes representations of the fire-breathing sun god Tonatiuh as well as Itztlacoliuhqui, the god of frost and cold.
With a weight of 62.27 grams, a diameter of 45.50 millimetres and a mintage of 2,500 pieces, the coin was issued on behalf of the Polynesian island nation of Tuvalu.
