New Issue: Georgia to release new banknotes this September

After issuing its updated 20-, 50- and 100-lari banknotes, the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) is slated to release its new five-lari denomination on Sept. 1.

Bank Governor Koba Gvenetadze made the announcement earlier this month while explaining the note’s new security features. According to Gvenetadze, the forthcoming five-lari notes will be “made with special materials and security mechanisms that make them robust against contamination and natural wear and tear.”

The note’s obverse design depicts Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University building alongside Ivane Javakhishvili’s portrait. The reverse depicts Niko Pirosmani’s paintings A Fisherman in a Red Shirt and Threshing alongside the Coat of Arms of Georgia.

The upgraded banknotes in denomination of 10 lari will be issued later on which the public will be informed accordingly.

The new 20- and 50-lari banknotes entered circulation on Feb. 1, 2016 while the new 100-lari notes have been available since Nov. 1 of last year.
