National Postage Stamp and Coin Show is back this weekend

The biannual National Postage Stamp and Coin Show, presented by Trajan Media, will make its return to the Greater Toronto Area this weekend.

The two-day show, which will be held at the Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale hotel on 6750 Mississauga Rd., is one of only a handful of national-level events combining philately and numismatics in Canada. In addition to a smorgasbord of interesting material on a bourse filled with more than 30 stamp and coin dealers, the show also boasts a world-class exhibition organized by the North Toronto Stamp Club (NTSC).

“Both of these fields – and I’ve done a bit of coin collecting, too – are history in your hands,” said NTSC President John Wilson, who added this year marks the 74th annual NTSC exhibition as well as the club’s 79th anniversary.

“Everybody who enjoys history – anyone who enjoys looking a little more carefully at the world around them – will find it very interesting.”

The show will be open tomorrow from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and on March 26 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $3 on March 25 but free on the final day. Parking is also free.

A ‘SMORGASBORD’ OF MATERIAL

Mike Walsh, part-owner of Trajan Media, which publishes Canadian Coin News (CCN) and Canadian Stamp News (CSN), said there will be a “smorgasbord” of philatelic and numismatic material at this year’s show.

Among this interesting material is an “intriguing” example of French Regime card money recently acquired by dealer Michael Findlay, owner of Angus, Ont.’s Certified Coins of Canada.

“It is a 6 Livres note, dated 1729, the first year of issue,” said Findlay, who’s also the current president of the Canadian Association of Numismatic Dealers.

This rare, 288-year-old card money example was graded Very Fine-25 by Professional Coin Grading Service. It’s signed by Charles de Beauharnois, governor of New France from 1726-47, and Gilles Hocquart, then-financial commissary and intendant of New France.

There will also be scores of Canadian and worldwide stamps, souvenir sheets and first-day covers; boxes of postcards; a variety of Canadian and foreign coins and banknotes; Royal Canadian Mint products; medals; tokens; militaria; bullion; and coin and stamp supplies available at the show.

NEW VENUE

The Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale hotel is the new home of the National Postage Stamp and Coin Show, which will be held in the hotel’s 9,000-square-foot Graydon Hall, located on the main floor.

Members of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) will be familiar with the hotel, which was the venue for the RCNA Convention in 2014, when it was called the Delta Mississauga. Hilton acquired the hotel a few years ago and has since made many renovations.

The hotel is located near Highway 401 and Highway 407 and is only 20 minutes from downtown Toronto. A special room rate of $115 a night is available to dealers and show-goers.

COIN & STAMP AUCTION

The Toronto-based auction house Auction Network will also be hosting a combined numismatic and philatelic sale at the show this March. Following lot viewing tomorrow at 11 a.m, the sale will begin at 6 p.m. and feature a range of coins, banknotes and stamps.

Highlights will include private and estate coin collections; Royal Canadian Mint products, including sold-out and rare issues; gold and silver bullion; International Coin Certification Service-graded coins and paper money; ancient coins medals and tokens; rare printing plates; German Mint issues; and world stamp collector albums.

Director of Stamp Services Jim Phillips will offer a ‘sneak peak’ at the remainder of Canada Post’s 2017 stamp program tomorrow afternoon.

EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS

Three educational seminars will also be hosted at the upcoming show in Mississauga.

Tomorrow at 1 p.m., Canada Post Director of Stamp Services Jim Phillips will give collectors a “sneak peek” at the remainder of the 2017 stamp program while shining a light on the issuing process used by the 12-person Stamp Advisory Committee. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Earlier in the day, at 11:30 a.m., Canadian Coin News Columnist and Consulting Editor Jeff Fournier will lead two 30-minute presentations – one for children and another for adults – about how to explore local numismatics.

Lastly, on March 26, a “meet the editors” session will be hosted by the editors of CCN, CSN and Nummus Canada with a focus on how to promote local clubs.

Leading the seminar will be Mike Walsh, publisher and editor of CCN and CSN; Jeff Fournier, CCN consulting editor; Serge Pelletier, editor-in-chief of Nummus Canada; and Sean Isaacs, Trends editor.

LAST YEAR’S SHOW

Last year’s show, which was described as “above-average” by many attendees, provided an exceptionally busy weekend for dealers on the bourse.

Isaacs, who owns Alliance Coin and Banknote, of Almonte, Ont., said the show exceeded his expectations.

“People came here with a purpose,” he said, adding there were “a lot of buyers” of modern Canadian material.

Les Garvey, owner of Edmonton’s Garvey & Sons, said the Sunday of last year’s show was “one of the busiest Sundays we’ve seen in a long time.”

“Our sales were very good. We saw a lot of new collectors and made a lot of new customers, and we come here often, too,” said Garvey, who makes the nearly 3,500-kilometre trip east to Toronto four times a year on business.

“Having more customers is always better for business, and with a lot of new people on our mailing list, it makes things much better. It’s always good to meet new collectors.”

Both Garvey and Isaacs will be returning to the National Postage Stamp and Coin Show bourse this weekend.
