Mint issues ‘Paramedics’ coin

The Royal Canadian Mint has issued its latest coin commemorating society’s greatest heroes.

Each of the National Heroes series’ four silver coins weighs 23.17 grams and has a face value of $15; a diameter of 30.07 mm; and a mintage of 10,000. Designed by Canadian artist Ken Ryan, the series’ second coin, issued today, uses selective colouring over detailed engraving to provide a snapshot of paramedics in action. Engraved in the background is a rear view of an ambulance – its doors open wide only moments after arriving at a hospital’s ambulance bay – while vibrant colour highlights the paramedics in their dark uniforms, complete with bright yellow and silver reflective bands just below the knees. Their faces are intent and convey the pressing nature of their important role; they are quick to unload the yellow-coloured stretcher from the ambulance before rushing toward the building, which will allow the patient to receive the continuum of medical care she desperately needs.

The remaining coins, these featuring the “Police” and the “Military”, will be released in August and September, respectively.
