Halifax club celebrates 60 years

By Jeffrey Wilson

Established in 1958, the Halifax Regional Coin Club (HRCC) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

To mark this milestone, the club hosted its aptly named “Collectors Show” on Oct. 14 in Nova Scotia’s capital city.

HRCC President Poul Mathiesen – with the help of volunteers from the club – put on a very successful fall show. Talking with the dealers, of which there were nearly 30 – most of them coin dealers, but also a few stamp sellers – they all commented they did quite well.

There was a reception the night before at the show venue, the Future Inns, and the club also issued golf shirts to all current members. The shirt features the current HRCC logo with the commemoration “1958 – 60 Years – 2018” under the crest.

The show was well attended, and most of the members were wearing their new shirts in a grand display of club pride.

ANNIVERSARY MEDAL

Continuing with the 60th anniversary of the HRCC, the club issued a set of show medals to mark the event.

Minted in bronze and silver, the medals used Citadel Hill – an iconic Halifax landmark – as their theme. Also known as Fort George, the current citadel was built beginning in 1828. This is the fourth version of the citadel with the original being built in 1749.

The medal also includes “60 Years 1958 – 2018” to highlight the anniversary

Interestingly, the silver medal also includes an error: the mint edge marked the medal sterling when in fact the medal is .999 Fine silver.

A total of 35 medals were minted in bronze and another 35 were minted in silver. Most medals were pre-ordered, but the few sets that remained sold quickly at the Collectors Show.

To promote the show, the HRCC also sold tickets for a draw of a gold coin and other door prizes.

The HRCC is planning to host another fall show at the same venue in 2019.
