‘Great Aussie Coin Hunt’ offers collectors 26-coin set

This October, Australians embarked on the “Great Aussie Coin Hunt” – an effort to promote coin collecting across that country – to collect a set of 26 specially issued $1 coins.

On staggered release throughout that month, the coins are “a fun and nostalgic celebration of Australian life with one coin for every letter of the alphabet,” according to a statement issued by Royal Australia Mint, which is running the coin hunt with Australia Post, the country’s postal service.

Since Oct. 1, Australians were invited to visit participating post offices to make a cash purchase and then hunt for the special $1 coins in their change. Collectors can also now purchase both full sets and individually packaged coins to complete their collections.

Among the coins’ themes are classic Australian icons, including Zooper Dooper, a frozen-ice treat popular throughout the country.
