Collector Debbie Krausert was recently named the 2018 recipient of the Calgary Numismatic Society’s (CNS) Donald D. Paterson Award, which is given annually to a CNS member for their contributions to numismatics.
Krausert joined the CNS, which is the host club of this year’s Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) Convention, in 2014 and served on the society’s executive from 2016-18. A regular volunteer at CNS meetings and shows, Krausert often serves as the club’s unofficial photographer at many of its events. She also helps to prepare the society’s annual submission to the RCNA’s Louise Graham Memorial Club of the Year Award.
The award was presented to Krausert at the CNS’ 2019 Annual Spring Coin Show on March 2-3 in Calgary.
DONALD PATERSON
The award’s namesake, Donald Paterson, was an Ontario-based artist and graphic designer who won the national design competition for the Royal Canadian Mint’s 1975 silver dollar.
Paterson’s design – featuring a rider atop a horse – commemorated Calgary’s 100th anniversary, which was marked in 1975—the same year the CNS hosted the convention of what was then known as the Canadian Numismatic Association (a predecessor of the RCNA).
Paterson, who attended that year’s convention, prepared a brochure entitled “How to Make a Dollar” to share details about his coin design as well as a signed photograph of the design and an encased specimen coin. Altogether, 2,000 packets – numbered from 1 to 2,000 – were prepared, and 26 copies (numbers 1,975 through 2,000) were donated to the CNS.
The first copy – #1,975 – was stored in the CNS’ archives while the remaining 25 copies were presented annually to correspond with its serial number.
Paterson later provided the CNS with additional copies beginning at #1,420, and these packets are still being used for the Paterson Award.
