About half a dozen lots, including a modern coin variety, set new auction records at this November’s Prominence Sale V.
The Canadian Numismatic Company (TCNC) offered more than 1,500 lots across five sessions on Nov. 6-10. Leading the way in session one, which offered Canadian and colonial coinage from the 19th century through today, was a record-setting 25-cent coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of its 1992 “Canada 125” series.
“People are seeking high-end, quality pieces, and they’re willing to pay strong prices for nice coins,” said TCNC owner and auctioneer Marc Verret, who added Mint-State (MS) examples stood out throughout the opening session.
Graded as MS-62 and designated as a coin-axis variety by International Coin Certification Service, it’s one of only three certified examples listed in CCN Trends. As Lot 260, it brought $5,355 (including buyer’s premium), topping its $1,000 estimate by more than five times and setting a new auction record for that coin.
It was also the first example handled by TCNC, Verret added.
