Canadian banknotes rank among the top highlights of a 385-lot paper money auction to be hosted by Stack’s Bowers Galleries this weekend.
A $1 banknote issued by the Dominion of Canada in 1898 (DC-13a) is the leading Canadian note, of which there are more than 20 slated to cross the block on Jan. 11 during the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC).
In Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) Gem Uncirculated-66 EPQ (exceptional paper quality), the note – Lot 30091 – is the finest known example and has an opening bid of $12,000 USD. There’s a pre-sale estimate of $20,000 USD-$30,000 USD.
Only two of the 200 examples of DC-13a and DC-13b certified by PMG were graded uncirculated.
“Both notes are treasures,” according to auctioneers, who added this example would “upgrade any current Dominion collection of issued notes.”
A 1937 Series $1,000 note is one of two being offered with consecutive serial numbers. Both examples have a pre-sale estimate of $10,000 USD-$15,000 USD.
1937 SERIES
Two $1,000 notes with consecutive serial numbers will also cross the block as Lots 30098 and 30099.
The first, in PMG About Uncirculated-55, has a serial number reading “0002763.” The second, in PMG About Uncirculated-50, has a serial number of “0002764.”
Both notes are from the Bank of Canada’s second issue, the 1937 Series, and have a pre-sale estimate of $10,000 USD-$15,000 USD.
