Canada first Western ally to declare war on Japan

It was on this day in 1941 that Canada became the first Western ally to declare war on Japan shortly after the attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii.

On the same day, Canada also declared war on Finland, Hungary and Romania.

Prime Minister Mackenzie King had the Governor General proclaim Canada’s declaration of war on Japan on Dec. 8, jointly with the U.S., Britain and other allied countries.

Twelve days after the Japanese attack, the Canadian government, operating under the War Measures Act, ordered the removal of Japanese Canadians and Japanese citizens inland 100 miles from the Pacific coast.
