Stack’s Bowers’ NYINC Auction will begin with Session A, featuring world paper money, on Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. Session B is scheduled for Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m., and Session C will be held the following day at 6:30 p.m.

HIGHLIGHTS

Among the top Canadian paper money highlights is Lot 1057, a 1935 Series French-language $20 note issued by the Bank of Canada. In Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) Choice Very Fine-35, this note has an estimate of $3,500-$4,500.

One of the top Canadian coinage highlights is Lot 2284, which includes eight commemorative gold coins issued between 1978 and 2001.

This $200 gold coin ‘Mother and Child’ is one of eight coins included in Lot 2284, which has a pre-sale estimate of $3,500-$4,000.

“A nice grouping of NGC Certified commemorative gold coins with a variety of commemorative designs,” reads the auction catalogue.

With an estimate of $3,500-$4,000, this lot includes five $100 pieces and three $200 pieces, each with NGC’s Ultra Cameo designation.

ANCIENTS

With a total of 150 lots, the Ancients section is expected to attract strong interest. According to auctioneers, the first of “many incredible pieces” appears early in the sale. Tge Akragas tetradrachm features two massive sea eagles and the fearsome Scylla and is expected to see spirited bidding.

The next lot is also another piece of classical artistry, a Catane tetradrachm, with the signature of the engraver Heracleidas.

Following these highlights will be a nice run of Syracusan tetradrachms, with the majority from the Michael L. Fogarty Collection.

Collectors of ancient Judaea are also advised to note the Bar Kochba zuz struck over a Vespasian “Judaea Capta” denarius.

Among the coins of the Roman Empire is an aureus of Domitian featuring a defeated Germanicus reverse design, along with a run of issues from the “Judaea Capta” series.

RICHARD STUART COLLECTION

Other highlights include selections from the Richard Stuart Collection.

According to auctioneers, Stuart’s dedication as a collector is “readily seen in this carefully curated material from Central America.”

Of note are modern gold issues with low mintages and 21 Central American Republic Sun over Mountain 8 Reales from the Guatemala Mint, each a different date or variety.

“The level of detail in this grouping is nearly unbelievable, a veritable forest of well-struck Ceiba trees,” added auctioneers.

Also present in this collection is the only known example of a Panama 150 Balboa in gold, the only 1947 crown in gold and possibly unique.
