Ottawa Numismatic Society welcomes 2016 RCNA Convention

This year’s Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) Convention kicked off yesterday in Ottawa with two local tours in nearby Montebello, Que., and Petite-Nation Region.

Trajan Media, publisher of Canadian Coin News, is attending the show at Table Nos. 73-74.

Today, the registration desk opens at 8 a.m., followed by another two local tours in nearby Almonte, Ont., and Chelsea, Que.

From noon-6 p.m., New Brunswick’s Geoffrey Bell Auctions will host a lot viewing session for the 2016 RCNA Sale, which begins later tonight at 7 p.m. Also at 7 p.m., RCNA President Henry Nienhuis and the Ottawa Numismatic Society, this year’s host club, will hold a welcome reception.

Auctioneer Brian Bell said the RCNA Sale is the “highlight of the year” for Bell Auctions, which is coming off a likewise outstanding sale at the recent Toronto Coin Expo, where a classic copper Owen Ropery storecard (Breton 564) sold for nearly $23,000, among other highlights.

“It’s the gathering place,” said Bell, of the annual RCNA conventions, “and having it in Ottawa made it one of our must-have venues.”

“Ottawa is full of history and we have attempted to make this offering an historic event to suit the venue,” he said, adding GBA hasn’t bid to host an RCNA auction since 2010, when it hosted the sale in Saint John, N.B., Bell’s home province. But this year’s sale is likely auction firm’s “best offering to date,” according to the long-time auctioneer.

“There are numismatic treasures not seen for generations and you are invited to participate.”
